CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally fifth-ranked Ithaca women's lacrosse team used a five-goal run spanning the second and third quarters to break open a tight game in earning an 11-6 victory over 12th-ranked Cortland Wednesday afternoon at the Stadium Complex in the season-opening game for both teams.

Hannah Lorenzen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) led the Red Dragons with two goals and an assist. Senior
Hannah Keech (Penn Yan/Penn Academy) netted two goals, seniors
Amy Hoeffner (Bay Shore) and
Katie Goodrich (Jordan/Jordan-Elbridge) each scored a goal, and senior
Lauren Hopsicker (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) added an assist.

Paige Potter (Cortland) registered seven saves and two ground balls for Cortland. Senior
Amanda Squillini (Stony Point/North Rockland) collected three ground balls and forced three turnovers. Sophomore
Julie Kadletz (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) secured five ground balls and Lorenzen added four ground balls.
Sophomore Maizy Veitch (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln Sudbury) tallied a game-high five points on four goals and an assist to pace the Bombers' offense. Alexa Ritchie (Bethpage) scored three goals, sophomore Caroline Wise (Delmar/Bethlehem) netted two goals, senior Megan Motkowski (Penfield) recorded a goal and an assist and graduate student Madison Boutureira (Scarsdale/The Ursuline School) contributed two assists.
Sophomore goalie Lexi Held (Ridgefield, CT) made seven saves and scooped up two ground balls. Wise won 11 draw controls, and Boutureira collected three ground balls.
Cortland took a 2-0 lead after the opening quarter, and led, 3-1, early in the second quarter before Ithaca closed the quarter on a 6-1 run for a 7-4 lead at the half. The advantage grew to 10-4 after three quarters. The Red Dragons opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back early goals to pull to within 10-6, but Ithaca sealed the win with the game's last goal for the 11-6 victory.
