Cortland Dominates Plattsburgh in SUNYAC Opener

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Twelve different players scored goals as the Cortland men's lacrosse team opened SUNYAC play with a 19-7 win versus Plattsburgh Saturday afternoon at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The Cardinals fell to 2-6 and 0-1.

Senior Pat Doyen (Miller Place) and sophomore Colton Smith (South Bristol/Penn Yan Academy) each scored three goals to lead the Cortland offensive attack. Graduate students Zak Jones (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach) and Brandon Stiles (Mastic/Eastport-South Manor) and freshman Ryan Scanlon (Cornelius, NC/William Amos Hough) netted two goals apiece.

Senior Dante Yacavone (Homer) and sophomore Matt Amato (Kingston/Millbrook School) tallied one goal and two assists apiece, and junior Tyler Starrett (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) recorded one goal and one assist for the Red Dragons. Senior Troy Morris (Long Beach), junior Jason Chiodo (Hamburg), sophomore Colin Peers (Fairport) and freshman Zach Perlett (Poughquag/Iona Prep) each netted a goal. Sophomore Bradley Cunningham (Syracuse/West Genesee) and freshman Klay Stuver (Fairport) chipped in with an assist.

Junior Matt Stento (Bethlehem) started in goal for Cortland, stopping a career-high 12 shots in 53:13. Freshman Owen Folkwein (Avon, CT) saw the first action of his career, turning aside four shots over the final 6:47. Senior Justin Wainwright (Homer) collected four ground balls and caused three turnovers. Graduate student Jacob Rivers (Homer) caused three turnovers, Stiles scooped up four ground balls, and Doyen, Amato and junior Jake DiBenedetto (Lynbrook) each secured three ground balls.

Senior Stephen Kane (Hampton, MA/Minnechaug Regional) paced Plattsburgh's offense with a game-high five goals. Senior Zach Gill (Miller Place/Rocky Point) and freshman Kyle Ruland (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) each scored a goal, while four others contributed one assist apiece.

Senior Christian Bassi (Windham, NH/Kimball Union) started in the cage for the Cardinals, making 16 saves through three quarters. Sophomore Dan Clements (Putnam Valley) registered two saves in the fourth quarter. Senior Daniel Umbro (Harrison) won 10-of-18 faceoffs and collected three ground balls. Graduate student Max Burgio (Niskayuna) finished with five ground balls and two caused turnovers, senior Justin Rocovich (Bohemia/Connetquot) collected five ground balls and junior Julian Pigliavento (Niskayuna) added four ground balls.
