SALISBURY, MD. - Cortland pounded out 15 hits, led by
Halle Wright's (Ballston Spa) 4-for-4 performance, and
Karlee Weeden (Maybrook/Valley Central) allowed one run over four innings as Cortland defeated Ursinus College, 13-1 in five innings, in a game played at Salisbury University.
Earlier in the day, the Red Dragons (6-6) lost to the nationally second-ranked Sea Gulls, 10-0 in five innings. Cortland will play the same two opponents on Sunday at Salisbury, starting with Ursinus at 11 a.m. and Salisbury directly afterwards.
Salisbury 10, Cortland 0 (5 inn.)
Salisbury (22-2 after Saturday's action) broke open a competitive game with five runs in the bottom of the fifth to force the eight-run rule into effect. Lindsey Windsor threw a two-hit shutout with six strikeouts and no walks. Abby Mace went 2-for-3 with a walk, three RBI and two runs. Her three-run homer ended the game. Natalie Paoli was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
Both of Cortland's hits came in the top of third with the Red Dragons trailing 1-0.
Julz Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) singled to the catcher with one out and
Elaina Ornstein (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) singled to third with two outs before a groundout ended the threat.
Lauren Meyers singled in a run for Salisbury in the first. In the third, a two-out error kept the inning alive and Paoli followed with a two-run double. The Sea Gulls' seven-run fifth included a Meghan Reed RBI single, and Emily Stockman sac fly and a Carrie Jacoby RBI single in addition to Mace's three-run homer.
Isabel Milazzo (Elmira/Elmira Notre Dame) started for Cortland and allowed only one earned run in three and two thirds innings. She gave up five hits and two walks and struck out two.
Cortland 13, Ursinus 1 (5 inn.)
Cortland took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a Koch two-run double and extended the lead to 5-0 in the second.
Lizzy Byers (New Paltz) singled, was bunted to second by
Alyssa Finno (Hurley/Kingston) and scored on
Hannah Fairbrother's (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) RBI double to deep center. After an Ornstein single,
Gina Meyers (Liverpool) singled home a run, Wright singled to load the bases, and
McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) hit a two-out single.
Ursinus (7-4) scored in the top of the third on an Allyson Meakim two-out RBI single. Cortland then sent 13 batters to the plate during an eight-run bottom of the third. Highlights during the inning included a Meyers RBI single, a Wright two-run single, a Barry bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, a
Tori Reich (Cornwall) bases-loaded walk, a Finno RBI single and a Fairbrother two-run double.
Wright was 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs, Fairbrother went 2-for-3 with two doubles, three RBI and two runs, and Finno ended 2-for-2 with an RBI. Koch and Meyers were each 2-for-4 with two RBI, Barry went 1-for-3 with two RBI, and Byers finished 1-for-2 with a walk and three runs scored.
Weeden, now 3-2 on the spring, gave up four hits and one run with two walks in four innings.
Mikayla Pourby (Binghamton) made her first appearance as a Red Dragon and allowed only one walk in a scoreless fifth inning.
Alexis Miller took the loss for the Bears after allowing 12 runs, nine earned, in two and a third innings. Meakim, Anna Mefford and Samantha Mallen each finished 1-for-2 at the plate.
