Offensive Explosion Helps Cortland Earn SUNYAC Split at Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. - Cortland exploded for 17 hits, including three home runs, as the Red Dragons defeated host Fredonia, 16-2, to earn a split of a SUNYAC softball doubleheader with the Blue Devils. Fredonia won the opener, 4-3, on Emily Chelius' two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh.

Cortland (8-8, 1-1 SUNYAC) will play at Buffalo State on Monday at 3 p.m. in a conference doubleheader. The twinbill was previously scheduled for Friday, and then briefly moved to Sunday, before being pushed back to Monday due to the weather.

Fredonia 4, Cortland 3

Trailing by a run, Cortland took a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh on a one-out Alysssa Finno (Hurley/Kingston) single and Lizzy Byers' (New Paltz) two-run homer. Fredonia, however, opened the bottom of the seventh with a Maria Caviris walk and Chelius followed with the winning two-run homer.

Fredonia led 1-0 in the second after scoring on an infield single combined with an error, and the Blue Devils pushed the lead to 2-0 in the fifth when Marisa Sultana walked with two outs and scored on an error. Cortland got a run back in the top of the sixth. Hannah Fairbrother (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) led off with a triple and scored on an Elaina Ornstein (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) single, although Ornstein was eventually stranded on third base.

Chelius, in addition to her winning homer, earned the victory in the circle for Fredonia. She gave up six hits and three runs with no walks and four strikeouts. Isabel Milazzo (Elmira/Elmira Notre Dame) was the tough-luck loser for the Red Dragons. She allowed only two hits and four runs, two earned. She fanned four and walked three.

Ornstein went 3-for-3 with an RBI for Cortland, while Byers, Finno and Fairbrother each finished 1-for-3. Megan Guidry and Chelius accounted for Fredonia's two hits.

Karlee Weeden (Maybrook/Valley Central) went four innings for the victory. She gave up two runs, one earned, on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Lindsey Richards (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) tossed a hitless and scoreless fifth inning with a strikeout and two walks.

Barry's RBI single put Cortland up 1-0 in the first. Fredonia tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a Caviris RBI single.

The Red Dragons, however, broke through for six runs in the top of the second on a Meyers three-run triple and a Barry three-run homer. Byers hit a two-run shot in the third to make it 8-1.

Fredonia tallied once in the bottom of the third on Alyssa Santiago's RBI single. Cortland responded with three runs in the fourth on a Barry RBI double and Koch's two-run homer, and the Red Dragons plated four runs in the fifth on back-to-back two-run doubles by Koch and Finno.
