Cortland Knocks Off #24 Geneseo, 14-6

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Graduate student Hannah Lorenzen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) scored a game-high seven points on four goals and three assists to lead the Cortland women's lacrosse team to a 14-6 victory versus nationally 24th-ranked Geneseo in SUNYAC action Saturday afternoon at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons won their fourth consecutive game, improving to 5-4 overall and 3-0 in the conference. The Knights fell to 5-2 and 1-1.

Freshman Gabby Meager (Syracuse/West Genesee) added three goals for Cortland. Sophomore Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) tallied two goals and two assists, senior Hannah Keech (Penn Yan/Penn Yan Academy) recorded two goals and one assist, senior Lauren Hopsicker (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) finished with one goal and two assists and senior Amy Hoeffner (Bay Shore) and junior Madelyn Czyz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) each scored a goal.

Graduate student Paige Potter (Cortland) registered eight saves in goal for the Red Dragons. Lorenzen won four draw controls, Czyz added four ground balls, three draws and three caused turnovers and graduate student Kayla Sweeney (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) contributed three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Six different players netted a goal for Geneseo led by graduate student Hannah Marafioti (Fairport), who finished with one goal and one assist. Graduate student Megan Henderson (Cazenovia), senior Emma Gaenzle (Rochester/Brighton) and sophomores Megan Cook (Massapequa), Caitlyn Korzeniewski (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) and Reegan Vorgang (Niskayuna) each tallied a goal. Sophomore Madelynn Brown (Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) recorded two assists.

Sophomore goalie Emily DeJohn (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) made eight saves and scooped up four ground balls for the Knights. Senior Isabelle Sarle (West Islip) finished with three ground balls and three caused turnovers, junior Meg Seeley (Cazenovia) contributed four ground balls and two caused turnovers and senior April Rowell (Glen Head/North Shore) added three ground balls.

Cortland jumped out to a 3-0 lead 8:01 into the game as Cashman scored once and Lorenzen notched a pair of goals. Gaenzle and Lorenzen traded goals to close the first quarter with the Red Dragons owning a 4-1 lead. The Knights pulled to within 5-3 less than five minutes into the second quarter as Marafioti and Korzeniewski sandwiched goals around Hopsicker's score. Meager's first goal of the game at 7:01 of the quarter sent Cortland to the half with a 6-3 advantage.

The Red Dragons started to build separation in the third quarter, netting three of the first four goals from three different players for a 9-4 lead. Cook's goal 1:05 before the end of the period made it a 9-5 game entering the final 15 minutes. Meager tallied back-to-back goals to open the fourth quarter, and after Henderson scored at 8:26, Cortland closed the game with goals from Hoeffner, Cashman and Keech for the 14-6 final.
