Red Dragons Down #24 St. John Fisher, 12-8, in Non-Conference Action

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The Cortland women's lacrosse team outscored nationally 24th-ranked St. John Fisher, 7-2 in the second half, including 4-0 in the fourth quarter, to earn a 12-8 come-from-behind win Wednesday afternoon in non-conference play at Growney Stadium. The Red Dragons improved to 6-4 on the season, while the Cardinals dropped to 2-6.

Graduate student Hannah Lorenzen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) paced the Cortland offense with five goals. Freshman Gabby Meager (Syracuse/West Genesee) scored three goals, senior Hannah Keech (Penn Yan/Penn Yan Academy) tallied two goals and one assist, senior Lauren Hopsicker (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) recorded one goal and two assists and senior Katie Goodrich (Jordan/Jordan-Elbridge) added one goal and one assist.

Graduate student Paige Potter (Cortland) made four saves and picked up three ground balls in goal for the Red Dragons. Junior Madelyn Czyz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) registered three draw controls and two ground balls, and four others each scooped up two ground balls.

Courtney O'Dea tallied two goals and two assists for St. John Fisher. Kathleen Salanger and Cara Landry each netted two goals, and Lauren Swartz and Farrah Zalla scored one goal apiece.

Goalie Lilly Goodsell stopped 10 shots and collected three ground balls. Mykenzie Black secured seven draws, Shannon Foster won six draws and Hannah King caused three turnovers.

The game remained tight through the first three quarters. The Cardinals led 3-2 after the first 15 minutes and 6-5 heading into halftime. Cortland scored the first two goals of the third quarter to grab a 7-6 lead, but St. John Fisher went back in front at 8-7 before Meager's third goal of the game sent the teams tied at 8-8 heading into the final 15 minutes of action. In the fourth quarter, Lorenzen scored three of her five goals, Goodrich netted her goal and Hopsicker picked up a pair of assists as the Red Dragons pulled away for the 12-8 victory.
