Cortland Wins Third Straight vs. Ranked Team, 12-9, Over Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Cortland women's lacrosse team earned its third consecutive win against a nationally ranked team, defeating 19th-ranked Brockport, 12-9, in SUNYAC action Saturday night. The Red Dragons won their sixth straight game, improving to 7-4 overall and 4-0 in the conference. The Golden Eagles dropped to 5-4 and 2-1.

Sophomore Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) led Cortland with five goals and one assist. Senior Shelby Meduski (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach) netted a season-high three goals. Senior Hannah Keech (Penn Yan/Penn Yan Academy) tallied a goal and two assists, graduate student Hannah Lorenzen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) and senior Lauren Hopsicker (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) recorded one goal and one assist each, freshman Gabby Meager (Syracuse/West Genesee) scored a goal and senior Amy Hoeffner (Bay Shore) chipped in with an assist.

Graduate student Paige Potter (Cortland) registered 12 saves in goal for the Red Dragons. Lorenzen won seven draw controls, Hopsicker scooped up three ground balls, senior Katie Goodrich (Jordan/Jordan-Elbridge) added two ground balls and two caused turnovers and junior Madelyn Czyz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) finished with two draws and two caused turnovers.

Alayna Foos scored a team-high four goals for Brockport. Allison Jennings netted two goals, Cassidy Burnash and Claire Odett tallied one goal and one assist and Courtney Cunningham added a goal.

Goalie Morgan Elmer made 13 saves. Logan Hibbard won eight draws and caused two turnovers, and Cunningham collected four ground balls.

Cortland never trailed in the tight game, leading 3-2 after the first quarter and 5-3 at the half. Each team scored four goals in the third quarter, and the Red Dragons held a 9-7 advantage heading into the final 15 minutes of play. The Golden Eagles pulled to within 10-9 at the 12:47 mark of the fourth quarter, but goals from Cashman and Meduski sealed the 12-9 Cortland win.
