Red Dragons Ground Hawks, 23-4

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Fifteen different players scored goals as the Cortland men's lacrosse team improved to 9-6 overall and 5-0 in the SUNYAC with a 23-4 win versus New Paltz in conference action Saturday afternoon at the Stadium Complex.

Seniors Troy Morris (Long Beach) and Christopher Dovi (Cortland) led Cortland with three goals each, with Morris also adding two assists. Senior Dante Yacavone (Homer) tallied two goals and two assists, graduate student Zak Jones (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach) recorded two goals and an assist, while graduate student Brandon Stiles (Mastic/Eastport-South Manor) and junior Sean Barrett (Lynbrook) netted two goals apiece.

Sophomore Colton Smith (South Bristol/Penn Yan Academy) contributed one goal and three assists, junior Jason Chiodo (Hamburg) finished with one goal and two assists, and freshmen Kole Stuver (Fairport) and Christian Nester (Johnson City) each chipped in with a goal and an assist. Junior Tyler Starrett (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow), sophomore Bradley Cunningham (Syracuse/West Genesee) and freshmen Tristan Triolo (Northport), Caden Yancey (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) and Ryan Scanlon (Cornelius, NC/William Amos Hough) added goals.

Sophomore Travis Wagner (Penfield) started in goal for the Red Dragons, stopping three shots in 37:14. Junior Matt Stento (Bethlehem) made two saves in 10:30. Sophomore Evan Alfano (Webster/Webster Schroeder) did not record a save in 6:56, and freshman Owen Folkwein (Avon, CT) did not register a save over the final 5:20.

Freshman Owen Neubauer (Monroe-Monroe-Woodbury) won 9-of-13 faceoffs and collected three ground balls. Freshman Jack O'Brien (Babylon) won all four of his faceoffs and scooped up three ground balls. Freshman Richie Finn (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) was successful on 4-of-6 faceoffs, while junior Jake DiBenedetto (Lynbrook) won 2-of-3 faceoffs. Stuver, Dovi and senior Justin Wainwright each secured four ground balls, and nine different players caused a turnover.

Freshman James Flanagan (New City/Clarkstown North) recorded a goal and an assist for the Hawks (2-10, 0-5 SUNYAC). Juniors Aidan Gregory (Ballston Spa), Thomas Armetta (West Islip) and Deacon Hill (Elbridge/Jordan-Elbridge) each netted a goal.

Sophomore goalie Ryan Steinhart (Hauppauge) turned aside 20 shots. Sophomore Tim Russell (Wantagh/Seaford) collected five ground balls and caused two turnovers.
