Cortland Picks Up Conference Split at New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - Isabel Milazzo (Elmira/Elmira Notre Dame) and Mikayla Pourby (Binghamton) combined to allow one run on six hits and Alyssa Finno (Hurley/Kingston) and Julz Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) each drove in two runs as Cortland defeated host New Paltz, 4-1, to earn a split of a SUNYAC doubleheader with the Hawks. New Paltz won the first game, 3-0, behind Lindsay Roman's six-hit shutout.

Cortland (18-12, 9-3 SUNYAC) will host Potsdam in a SUNYAC doubleheader Sunday at 2 p.m.

New Paltz 3, Cortland 0

Roman struck out six batters and walked none for her 12th victory of the season. The Hawks scored in the second on a Nicole Greco leadoff double and a Rhionna Bianchini two-out double. The hosts added two runs in the third on a two-out, two-run double by Sydney Bonewit with the bases loaded.

Halle Wright (Ballston Spa) and McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) each went 2-for-3 and Hannah Fairbrother (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) was 1-for-2 for the Red Dragons. Karlee Weeden (Maybrook/Valley Central) started in the circle and gave up six hits and a walk in three innings to drop to 9-3 on the season. Lindsey Richards (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) pitched three scoreless innings of relief and allowed just one hit and one walk and struck out one.

Cortland had runners on first and third in the third after a Fairbrother single, a fielder's choice and a two-out Wright single before a groundout ended the inning. In the top of the sixth, Wright singled with one and Barry hit a double to right to put runners on second and third, but Roman escaped the jam with a pop-up and flyout.

Cortland 4, New Paltz 1

Milazzo tossed four scoreless innings for her second victory of the season. She gave up four hits and no walks and struck out two batters. Pourby allowed one run over the final three innings for her second save of the spring. She gave up two hits and three walks, and she was one out away from completing a combined shutout before Katie Quagliana hit an RBI double for the Hawks (24-14, 11-5 SUNYAC).

Cortland took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Elaina Ornstein (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) reached on an error and stole second. Wright's one-out walk put runners on first and second, and Koch was hit by a pitch with two outs to load the bases. Finno followed with a two-run single to center.

The Red Dragons scored two more runs in the fifth. Gina Meyers (Liverpool) reached on an error and Wright singled. With one out, Koch hit a double to left to drive home both runners.

New Paltz left nine runners on base, including seven in scoring position. The Hawks had runners on second and third with one out in the fourth after a Madison Maggs single and Carol Ann Campsey double, but Milazzo retired the next two batters on a pop-up and groundout. The Hawks also had runners on second and third with one out in the sixth against Pourby, but she struck out the next hitter and induced a groundout to end the threat.

Wright went 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. She has reached base safely (via hit, walk or hit by pitch) in 15 straight games - 14 of those games with at least one hit and one game (Game 2 Friday versus Oneonta) with two walks.

Jillian Harrison started for New Paltz and gave up three hits and four runs, one earned, in four innings. She fanned four batters and walked one. Sydney Waldon permitted just one Cortland baserunner - Koch's two-run double - after entering with no outs and two on in the top of the fifth.
