Cortland Splits with #22 Geneseo

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Isabel Milazzo (Elmira/Elmira Notre Dame) and Mikayla Pourby (Binghamton) combined to allow one run on five hits and Alyssa Finno (Hurley/Kingston) finished 2-for-3 with an RBI double as Cortland defeated nationally 22nd-ranked Geneseo, 5-1, to earn a SUNYAC doubleheader split over the visiting Knights.

Geneseo (28-4, 14-2 SUNYAC) won the opening game, 8-3, and has clinched the top seed and hosting rights for the league's six-team, double-elimination postseason tournament, which begins next Thursday. Cortland (21-13, 12-4 SUNYAC) will be either the second or third seed in the tournament, depending on the outcome of the Red Dragons' home doubleheader Saturday versus Brockport along with Oneonta's doubleheader Saturday at New Paltz. Cortland and Oneonta are currently tied for second in the league, one game ahead of New Paltz.

Geneseo 8, Cortland 3

Geneseo starter Lauren Kersch improved to 12-0 with a three-hitter. She struck out one, walked one, and gave up three runs, but only one earned. She entered the game with a 0.84 ERA. Rebecca Schwartz provided the biggest hit for the Geneseo offense with a grand slam in the top of the second that gave the Knights the lead for good.

Cortland took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Elaina Ornstein (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) walked, stole second with one out, and scored on a two-out McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) single up the middle. The grand slam by Schwartz in the second was set up by a walk and two hit batters.

The Red Dragons drew within 4-2 in the bottom of the second. Finno was hit by a pitch, Lizzy Byers (New Paltz) reached on an error, Tori Reich (Cornwall) bunted the runners to second and third. Ornstein hit an RBI grounder to short two batters later with the bases loaded.

Geneseo put up three runs in the fourth on a Taylor Riccardi sac fly and an Audrey Minton two-run single. The Knights added a run in the fifth when Iris Kahris led off with a pinch-hit single and eventually scored later in the inning on a wild pitch. Cortland closed the scoring in the bottom of the seventh on a Reich one-out single, an error after a groundout, and an Ornstein RBI single to left center.

Karlee Weeden (Maybrook/Valley Central) started for Cortland and went the first four innings. Lindsey Richards (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) tossed the final three frames and gave up one run on one hit with a walk and two strikeouts.

Cortland 5, Geneseo 1

Milazzo earned her fourth victory of the season after going five and a third inning in the circle. She allowed only two hits over the first five innings - a Minton one-out double in the second and an Olivia Fazio one-out single in the fifth. The lone run she allowed came in the sixth on a Leah VanDerwarker leadoff double and Kaitlyn Schmitz one-out double. Milazzo finished the game with four hits and one walk allowed with one strikeout.

Pourby, making her first home appearance of the spring, earned her third save of the year. She entered after the Schmitz double and Cortland clinging to a 2-1 lead. Pourby hit the first batter she faced, but induced the next hitter to fly out for the second out. Fazio, who finished 2-for-3, followed with a single to left, but Geneseo pinch runner Hannah Olejniczak was thrown out trying to score from second on a perfect throw from left fielder Hannah Fairbrother (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton). Pourby allowed only one walk in a scoreless seventh inning.

Cortland went up 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning. Ornstein walked with one out and scored on a Gina Meyers (Liverpool) double to left. Meyers advanced to third on the throw home and scored on Halle Wright's (Ballston Spa) groundout to short.

The Red Dragons posted three big insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 5-1. Wright singled with one out and scored on Barry's double to center. Finno doubled to right center with two outs to drive in Barry, and she scored when Byers reached on an error.

Geneseo starter Elizabeth Eberhardt, who entered the game with a 0.50 ERA, fell to 5-2 on the season after allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits in five and two thirds innings. She struck out five and walked three
