CORTLAND, N.Y. – Seven different players scored goals as the Cortland women's soccer team opened its season with a commanding 8-0 victory versus Delhi Thursday night in non-conference action at Holloway Field.
Sophomore
Katie Cosenza (Stony Point/Ward Melville) led the Red Dragon offense with two goals and an assist. Graduate students
Jaden Galluzzo (Commack) and
Jayden Kelley, juniors
Simone Neivel (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and
Kayla Valerioti (Oakdale/Connetquot), sophomore
Isabella Auth (Mount Sinai) and freshman
Julia DeTurris (Hicksville) each tallied a goal. Juniors
Liz Allen (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) and
Bella Casucci (Smithtown/Smithtown West) collected assists.
Sophomore goalie
Kristen Spendal (Dumont, NJ) played the first half for Cortland in her first action as a Red Dragon and did not face a shot on goal. Freshman
Jessica Daymond (Queens/Channel View School for Research) played the second half and also did not see a shot on the frame. Sophomore Andraya Hunt (Cohoes) made five saves in 74:55 for the Broncos before giving way to sophomore Julia Ruppert (Franklin Square/H. Frank Carey), who made one save and did not allow a goal over the final 15:05.
The Red Dragons built a 6-0 lead after the first half. Neivel opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a one-time shot at the right post off a cross from the left. Galluzzo made it a 2-0 game 52 seconds later when she converted a penalty kick. Cosenza then netted back-to-back goals. She scored on a header in the 17th minute and sent a shot inside the right post after a Delhi turnover just over two minutes later. Auth's shot into the upper left corner in the 25th minute pushed the lead to 5-0 before Kelley scored from the center of the box inside the right post 1:39 before the half.
Valerioti converted a penalty kick in the 62nd minute, and DeTurris tallied her first collegiate goal in the 75th minute when she beat Hunt one-on-one after a Bronco turnover to complete the scoring. Delhi nearly spoiled the shutout in the 81st minute, but freshman Shaniyah Myers (North Babylon) put a 20-yard shot over an open goal after a Cortland turnover.
