Red Dragons Battle Yellowjackets to 1-1 Tie

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland and Rochester women's soccer teams played to a 1-1 tie Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Holloway Field as each team netted a goal in the first half and went scoreless in the second half. Both team's records now stand at 1-0-1 on the season.

Graduate student Jaden Galluzzo (Commack) scored her second goal of the season for Cortland. Sophomore goalie Kristen Spendal (Dumont, NJ) registered four saves.

Sophomore Jordyn Kowalkowski (Lower Burrell, PA/Burrell) tallied Rochester's goal with sophomore Natalie Kocsis (White Lake, MI/Lakeland) collecting an assist. Senior Becca Rust (Pittsburgh, PA/Ellis School) made three saves in the opening half before giving way to sophomore Grace Kuropatkin (Marshfield, MA/Thayer Academy), who stopped one shot in the second half.

Galluzzo gave the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute, dribbling into the box and sending a shot inside the right post. The Yellowjackets generated two quality chances in an effort to tie the game, but Spendal came off her line and made a sprawling save on a shot by junior Claire Grover (Barrington, RI) alone in the box in the 11th minute and senior Carolyn Richards (Los Angeles, CA/Notre Dame) rang a shot off the crossbar from the right side in the 30th minute. Kowalkowski netted the equalizer just 1:19 before the half, taking a touch through ball from Kocsis and slipping a shot inside the left post.

Each team generated six shots in the second half with a pair of good chances for each. In the 54th minute, Galluzzo fed a pass to sophomore Isabella Auth on the left side, but her left-footed shot went wide left. Five minutes later, Grover sailed a shot just wide left from the right side of the box. Junior Simone Neivel (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) had an opportunity for Cortland in the 72nd minute. Rochester turned the ball over with Kuropatkin well off her line. Neivel attempted a one-time shot from 35 yards out at the empty goal but the bid went wide right. The Yellowjackets created the final scoring chance in the 80th minute. Freshman Riya Kunderan (East Brunswick, NJ) was loose dep inside the box, forcing Spendal to charge off her line to stuff the shot and keep the game tied at 1-1.
