BALTIMORE, MD. – Junior
Mateo Marra (Ossining) scored his first career goal as a Red Dragon in the 83rd minute to give the nationally 10th-ranked Cortland men's soccer team a 3-2 victory over Mary Washington in a neutral-site game Sunday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 3-2, while the Eagles fell to 3-2.
Sophomores
Yasin Choukri (Wilton, CT) and
Matt Shultz (Oneonta) added goals for Cortland. Sophomore
Cade Denlinger (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown Area) collected two assists. Freshman goalie
Luke van Galen (Georgetown, MA) registered four saves.
Juan Vargas and Abel Luwis scored unassisted goals for Mary Washington. Goalie Griffin Hemmindinger made one save.
Choukri gave Cortland a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute with his first goal as a Red Dragon, heading in a long cross from Denlinger. Vargas tied the score in the 58th minute, but Shultz put Cortland back ahead in the 66th minute with his fourth goal of the season on a 15-yard shot after a carry down the left side. Luwis again pulled the Eagles even in the 83rd minute before Marra netted the game winner just over a minute later, heading in a corner-kick serve from Denlinger, to give the Red Dragons the 3-2 win.
