Cortland Improves to 2-0 in SUNYAC Play with 7-2 Win at Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Cortland improved to 2-0 both overall and in SUNYAC play with a 7-2 victory at Plattsburgh in women's tennis dual-match action.
 
The Red Dragons return to action Saturday at noon at New Paltz.
 
Cortland led 2-1 after doubles play. Abby Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott) and Vyda Van Denburg (Kingston) cruised to an 8-1 win at first doubles and Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) and Karlie Cubino (Marcy/Whitesboro) won, 8-4, at second doubles. Plattsburgh's Nicole Svantner and Samantha Svantner earned a tight, 8-6, win at third doubles.
 
Cortland won in straight sets in five of six singles matches, although two of those wins required a first-set tiebreaker. Streety won 7-6 (7-0), 6-2 at third singles and Van Denburg was a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 winner at fourth singles. Madigan won, 6-0, 6-1 at the number one flight, Cubino earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory at number five, and Emma Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott) registered a 6-2, 6-4 win at sixth singles. Plattsburgh's Alyana Leandry won at second singles, 6-4, 6-2.
 
Tuesday's Match Declared "No Contest"
 
Cortland's home match this past Tuesday versus Hartwick has been declared a "no contest" and no team or individual results will officially count. The teams elected to start play with singles matches, and Hartwick was leading, 3-2, when the match was suspended due to lightning detection. With the teams not resuming the match within 48 hours, the match officially is deemed a "no contest."
 
Red Dragon highlights from the match, although not counting toward official records, was Abby Madigan winning 5-7, 6-1, 10-7 (10-point super tiebreaker in place of the third set) at number one singles and Emma Madigan winning 6-2, 6-0 at sixth singles. Cubino was in a battle at fourth singles when play was halted – she won the first set, 6-4, and lost the second set, 7-5. The third set super tiebreaker was tied at 9-9 at the time of the suspension.
