NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Cortland women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season with an 8-1 setback at unbeaten New Paltz. The point for Cortland (2-1, 2-1 SUNYAC) came at fifth singles as
Karlie Cubino (Marcy/Whitesboro) recorded a 6-1, 6-3 victory.
The 8-1 team score, however, did not reflect the tightness of more than half the matches during the afternoon. In doubles play,
Abby Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott) and
Vyda Van Denburg (Kingston) battled before losing, 8-5, and the Red Dragons' third doubles team of
Emily Morano (Olyphant, PA/Mid Valley) and
Isabella Bonapace (Leonia, NJ) went to the wire before losing, 8-6.
Madigan played a close first set at first singles before losing, 7-5, 6-0, and
Diana Kozenyatko (Liverpool) bounced back from a 6-0 loss in the first set at second singles and lost a close 7-5 decision in the second set.
Van Denburg split her first two sets at fourth singles, losing the first, 6-2, before winning the second, 6-4. Since the team winner was already determined, a super tiebreaker to 10 points was played in lieu of the third set and Van Denburg fell, 10-5.
Emma Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott) lost 6-4 in the first set at sixth singles, followed by a 6-1 loss in the second set.
Justine Stanejko, Onalee Batcheller, Anya Barteck, Loretta Donovan and Alex Chimenti each posted both doubles and singles wins for New Paltz (3-0, 3-0 SUNYAC).
Cortland will return to action with a non-league home match versus Alfred University on Thursday, Sept. 22.
