#19 Cortland Drops First Game of Season, 3-1, at William Smith

GENEVA, N.Y. – The William Smith field hockey scored two early goals and went on to defeat nationally 19th-ranked Cortland, 3-1, Saturday afternoon in non-conference action. The Red Dragons dropped to 4-1 on the season, while Herons improved to 5-1.

Senior Lily Fox (Northport) scored Cortland's goal. Freshman goalie Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) turned aside three shots.

Emily Leonard and Rebecca Mantione paced William Smith with a goal and an assist each. Sofia Pattillo added a goal. Goalie Kristen McCormick registered five saves.

Pattillo opened the scoring just 3:21 into the game before Leonard's unassisted goal at 8:51 made it a 2-0 score. Mantione pushed the Heron lead to 3-0 with her goal off a penalty corner 3:52 into the third quarter. Fox put Cortland on the scoreboard, converting a penalty stroke just 49 seconds later.

The Red Dragons outshot William Smith, 3-0, in the fourth quarter, but one shot went wide and McCormick made saves on the other attempts to seal the 3-1 Heron victory.
