Game Recap: Field Hockey |

#19 Red Dragons Open SUNYAC Play with 4-1 Win vs. Brockport

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Hanna Corrigan (Barneveld/Holland Patent) and Keirra Ettere (Mahopac/Lakeland) each scored twice as nationally 19th-ranked Cortland opened its SUNYAC schedule with a 4-1 field hockey win over visiting Brockport.

Cortland (5-1, 1-0 SUNYAC) dominated the game statistically, holding a 34-2 advantage in shots and a 23-2 lead in penalty corners. Brockport (5-2, 0-1 SUNYAC), however, stayed within striking distance much of the way behind the strength of goalie Ella Buchanan's 17 saves, along with four defensive saves – two by Emma Acevedo and one each by Mary Young and Justine Draper. Cortland goalie Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) finished with one save.

Cortland grabbed the lead 9:33 into the first period when Corrigan scored from about 15 yards out after intercepting a Brockport defender's clearing attempt. The Golden Eagles, however, knotted the game less than a minute later. Katelyn Mello dribbled into the circle on a breakaway, eluded a sliding attempt by a rushing Morgan and slid a pass to Bailey Lazore, who knocked the ball into the empty cage.

The hosts took the lead for good with four minutes left in the first half on a shot from Ettere from approximately seven yards out after controlling a lead pass from Lily Fox (Northport).

Cortland added a key insurance goal with 11:05 left in the contest. During a penalty corner play, Corrigan controlled the ball at the top of the circle, dribbled past two defenders and scored from eight yards away. Ettere closed the scoring with 5:47 remaining when she converted off a crossing pass from Grace Todd (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) for Todd's first collegiate point.

Cortland travels to St. Lawrence for a non-league game next Wednesday at 4 p.m.
