CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Juan Velez (Cuenca, Ecuador/Peekskill (NY)) scored with 17 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Plattsburgh men's soccer team to a 3-3 tie at 17th-ranked Cortland Saturday afternoon in SUNYAC action at Holloway Field.

Senior Riley Williams (Watertown/South Jefferson) led the Red Dragons (4-2-1, 0-0-1 SUNYAC) with two goals. Junior Alex Lessman (Plainview-Old Bethpage) scored a goal, and sophomore Yasin Choukri (Wilton, CT) collected an assist. Freshman goalie Luke van Galen (Georgetown, MA) turned aside six shots.

Sophomore Brian Coughlan (Pearl River) tallied a goal and an assist for the Cardinals (4-1-1, 0-0-1). Junior Dylan Shalvey (Cavan, Ireland/Tappan Zee (NY)) added a goal, and sophomore John Hayes (Pearl River) contributed an assist. Sophomore goalie Teddy Healy (Amityville/Kellenberg Memorial) made five saves.

Little action was generated in the opening 45 minutes with the Red Dragons holding a slim, 4-3, advantage in shots. Cortland opened up a 1-0 lead after the first half when Williams drove a long shot inside the left post in the 24th minute.

The second half proved to be much different with Plattsburgh owning a 13-11 shot edge and the teams combining for five goals. Shalvey tied the game in the 52nd minute, scoring on a rebound at the right post after van Galen made a save on a shot by Coughlan that caromed off the crossbar.

Cortland then scored two goals in just over a three-minute span to build a 3-1 lead. Lessman touched in a shot at the right post off Choukri's cross from the left in the 59th minute, and Williams knuckled a 30-yard free kick inside the right post in the 62nd minute. Coughlan made it a 3-2 game in the 72nd minute with a bending 19-yard free kick that tucked inside the right post. The Cardinals continued to press for the equalizer and eventually knotted the game when Velez struck a shot from the top of the box that found its way inside the left post for the 3-3 final.
