Saints Edge #13 Red Dragons, 2-1, in Non-Conference Action

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Sam Pijpers (Amsterdam, Netherlands/Island School Hong Kong) scored goals just over three minutes apart in the first half and the St. Lawrence men's soccer team held on for a 2-1 non-conference win at nationally 13th-ranked Cortland Tuesday night at Holloway Field.

Senior Riley Williams (Watertown/South Jefferson) recorded his fourth goal of the season for the Red Dragons (4-3-1). Freshman goalie Luke van Galen (Georgetown, MA) turned aside two shots.

Seniors Miles Levy (Bedford/Fox Lane) and Marvin Sibanda (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Taft School) each contributed assists for the Saints (4-1-2). Senior goalie Ben Woelfinger (Bod Homburg, Germany/Gymnasium Oberursel) made four saves.

Williams gave Cortland a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute, driving a knuckling 25-yard free kick around the St. Lawrence wall and into the right side of the goal. Pijpers tied the game in the 36th minute with a shot from the left side that found its way inside the right post. The game winner came in the 39th minute. After a Cortland turnover in its defensive third, Pijpers took a pass from Sibanda on the right side and drove a shot off van Galen's hands and inside the left post.

The Red Dragons nearly netted the equalizer in the 63rd minute. Junior Mateo Marra (Ossining) fed a perfect pass deep into the box to junior AJ Ali (Rochester/Brighton), who was unmarked. In alone on goal, Ali hit a shot that Woelfinger denied with a sprawling save to his midsection.

Van Galen followed with two big saves of his own to keep the score at 2-1. In the 64th minute, he made a leaping save at the upper right on a bid by Pijpers and denied a 30-yard free kick by Levy with a diving save at the right post in the 73rd minute. As play went deeper into the game, St. Lawrence worked on possessing the ball to limit Cortland chances. The best opportunity for the Red Dragons to even the score came with 14 seconds left, but sophomore Yasin Choukri (Wilton, CT) sent a shot wide left after freeing himself in the box sealing the win for the Saints.
