Offense Erupts in Second Half of 6-1 Win vs. Potsdam

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's soccer team scored five second-half goals in earning a 6-1 victory versus Potsdam in SUNYAC action Wednesday afternoon at Holloway Field. The Red Dragons improved to 4-0-3 overall and 1-0-1 in the conference, while the Bears dropped to 4-5 and 0-2.

Graduate student Jaden Galluzzo (Commack) scored a pair of goals to lead Cortland. Junior Simone Neivel (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) tallied a goal and an assist, and junior Liz Allen (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury), sophomore Isabella Auth (Mount Sinai) and freshman Rachael Ehrlich (South Setauket/Ward Melville) each netted a goal.

Freshman Julia DeTurris (Hicksville) collected two assists for Cortland. Graduate student Jayden Kelley (East Berne/Voorheesville) and sophomore Katie Cosenza (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) picked up one assist apiece. Sophomore goalie Kristen Spendal (Dumont, NJ) made two saves.

Freshman Emma Wilson (Nesconset/Sachem North) scored Potsdam's goal. Senior goalie Chloe Gordon (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) registered seven saves, including several exceptional stops.

The Bears generated the first scoring chance in the game in the sixth minute. Sophomore Mikayla Shipley (North Chili/Churchville-Chili) blasted a 30-yard shot that Spendal punched over the crossbar. In the 17th minute, Galluzzo had an excellent chance to put Cortland ahead, breaking alone into the box and working around Gordon, but her shot went high.

Neivel broke the scoreless tie in the 24th minute, one-timing a cross from Cosenza inside the right post. Thirteen minutes later, Wilson tied the game when she scored off a free kick from a sharp angle. Gordon then came up with a pair of impressive saves in the closing minutes of the half to keep it a 1-1 game, denying a bid by junior Erica Gangemi (Syracuse/Westhill) with a kick save in the 42nd minute and stoning a shot from 10 yards out by DeTurris in the 44th minute.

The second half all belonged to Cortland. Galluzzo scored the game winner with a shot from the middle of the box in the 55th minute and converted a penalty kick in the 61st minute to make it a 3-1 game. In the 69th minute, Allen put a shot inside the left post from a sharp angle on the right side to push Cortland's advantage to 4-1. The Red Dragons added two late scores on Ehrlich's first career goal in front in the 85th minute and Auth's second goal of the season in the 89th minute for the 6-1 final.
