CORTLAND, N.Y. – Oneonta earned wins in the final three completed singles matches to break a 3-3 tie and the visiting Red Dragons defeated Cortland, 6-3, in a SUNYAC women's tennis match.
Oneonta, the defending league champion, improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in SUNYAC play. Cortland is now 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference. Cortland will travel to Geneseo for a SUNYAC match Saturday at 1 p.m. and will host Farmingdale State in a non-league match Sunday at noon.
Oneonta led after doubles play, 2-1, although Cortland's two setbacks were both nip-and-tuck affairs. Cortland's doubles victory came from
Isabella Bonapace (Leonia, NJ) and
Emily Morano (Olyphant, PA/Mid Valley), 8-3, on the third flight. Oneonta's Julia Holtermann and Maxie Karen won 8-6 over
Abby Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott) at first doubles, while Sophia Schutte and Brianna Shaw won 8-7, with a 7-1 tiebreaker, versus
Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) and
Karlie Cubino (Marcy/Whitesboro) at second doubles.
Karen's 6-1, 6-0 win at third singles put Oneonta ahead, 3-1, but Cortland tied the match with a 6-0, 6-0 victory by
Emma Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott) at sixth singles and a 6-2, 6-1 victory by Cubino at fifth singles. Oneonta, however, regained the lead when Shaw wrapped up a 6-0, 6-0 win at fourth singles and clinched the victory with Schutte's 6-1, 6-1 victory at second singles. Holtermann closed the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-1 win at first singles.
