SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Junior
Hanna Corrigan (Barneveld/Holland Patent) scored with 6:52 remaining in regulation to lift the nationally 14th-ranked Cortland field hockey team to a 3-2 non-conference victory at Skidmore Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons closed their regular season with a 15-1 record and next host Brockport in the SUNYAC Semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 2 p.m.
Corrigan finished with two goals and an assist for Cortland. Junior
Gianna Trunfio (Clinton) scored her team-high 16th goal of the season, and junior
Jamie Snyder (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) recorded an assist. Sophomore goalie
Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) made four saves, and graduate student
Elizabeth Pratt (Saratoga Springs) made a key fourth-quarter defensive save.
Abby Ezickson tallied both goals for the Thoroughbreds (7-10). Kayla Hassett collected an assist. Goalie Victoria Bodnar turned aside 14 shots.
Ezickson gave Skidmore the lead at the 12:09 mark with a shot from deep on the right side of the circle. Trunfio tied the game at 20:05 when she scored on a deflection in front off a reverse-stick pass from Corrigan. Cortland grabbed a 2-1 lead just over two minutes later on Corrigan's goal near the left post after a penalty corner. Ezickson sent the game into the half tied at 2-2 with a strong shot from the right side after carrying into the circle.
After a scoreless third quarter, Corrigan scored the game winner while the Red Dragons were up two players. She possessed the ball in Cortland's offensive third, carried into the top of the circle and drove a low shot inside the left post. The Red Dragons held the Thoroughbreds without a shot the remainder of the game to seal the 3-2 win.
