CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally 15th-ranked Cortland men's soccer team scored three second-half goals and earned a 3-0 victory versus fourth-ranked Oneonta Wednesday afternoon at Holloway Field in SUNYAC action.
Seniors
Jack Coleman (Newark Valley/Maine-Endwell) and
Mateo Marra (Ossining) and junior
Yasin Choukri (Wilton, CT) each netted a goal for the host Red Dragons (10-1-1, 4-0 SUNYAC). Senior
Alex Lessman (Plainview/Plainview-Old Bethpage) collected an assist.
Sophomore goalie
Jordan Ott (Fort Worth, TX/Southwest Christian) stopped four shots to post the shutout for Cortland. Senior goalie Nate Hanna (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) registered seven saves for the visiting Red Dragons (9-2, 2-2 SUNYAC).
Each team generated a quality chance in the opening half but could not capitalize. Choukri was denied in close by Hanna in the seventh minute after Oneonta turned the ball over, and Ott was forced to make a leaping save on sophomore Ali Somow's (Utica/Proctor) bending 30-yard shot in the 23rd minute.
Coleman broke the scoreless game in the 49th minute when he turned at the top of the box and slipped a low shot inside the left post for his seventh goal of the season. Oneonta had an excellent chance to tie the game in the 55th minute, but freshman Adrian Matute (Islip) missed wide left on an open header off a cross from the right.
Marra's fourth goal of the season in the 71st minute put Cortland up 2-0. Marra stole an attempted outlet pass, broke in alone on Hanna and put a shot inside the post. Hanna kept it a two-goal game with back-to-back diving saves on Coleman and sophomore
Josh Carroll (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) in the 81st minute. Choukri completed the scoring with seven minutes remaining, finishing off a breakaway after Oneonta was pressing to cut into Cortland's lead for the 3-0 final.
