BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Cortland men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened their 2023-24 seasons with dual-meet setbacks versus Geneseo, the defending SUNYAC champions, at the Flickinger Center at Erie Community College. The Red Dragon men fell to the Knights, 243-57, and the women dropped a 243-56 decision.
Hunter Bernhardt (Groton) led the Cortland men with second-place finishes in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:28.01) and 500-yard freestyle (4:59.49).
Kevin Kohlhoff (West Islip) placed third in both diving events with scores of 267.60 points on the 3-meter board and 243.70 points on the 1-meter board.
Jack Clark (Rochester/Aquinas Institute) finished third in the 50-yard freestyle (22.71) and
Kellen Dickman (Montgomery/Valley Central) was third in the 100-yard butterfly (54.67).
For the women,
Leah Bernhardt (Groton) finished second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:34.36) and third in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:27.09).
Areiannah Martinez-Reyes (Queens/Benjamin Cardozo) was runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.24) and
Madison Heffern (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert Christian) was second in 1-meter diving (196.10 points). In addition,
Emily Lantry (Massena/St. Lawrence) finished third in the 200-yard freestyle (2:04.81) and
Caitlin Elsasser (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) placed third in the 200-yard butterfly (2:24.20).
Cortland returns to action on Friday, Oct. 20 when it sends divers to an event hosted by Colgate. The Red Dragons will host the Cortland Pumpkin Relays on Saturday, Oct. 21.
