SPRINGFIELD, MASS. – Jake Harrison scored 33 points as the Western New England men's basketball team defeated Cortland, 83-63, on Day 1 of Western New England's Tip Off Tournament.
Cortland (0-2) will face Bates College in the third-place game Sunday at 1 p.m., while Western New England will play Kean in the title game at 3 p.m.
Kareem Lubin (Monroe/Washingtonville) led Cortland with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
Danny Linehan (Blauvelt/Tappan Zee) and
Aaron Coston (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley) finished with 13 points apiece. Linehan hit 3-of-6 shots from the 3-point arc, and Coston led the Red Dragons with four rebounds.
Harrison shot 9-of-10 from the field and 13-of-15 from the foul line for the Golden Bears. He also led the team with eight rebounds. Gavin Greene scored 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting and Mike Resnick added 10 points.
Western New England shot 67 percent (29-of-43) from the field in the game, including 89 percent (16-of-18) in the second half. Cortland shot 45 percent overall and 39 percent from 3-point range.
Cortland trailed 20-19 with 7:19 left in the first half and was within 32-29 before the hosts went on a 8-1 run over the final minute of the period to take a 40-30 lead. The Red Dragons got back to within six at 49-43 with 14:41 remaining before being outscored 10-3 over the next three minutes. Western New England's lead remained in double figures the rest of the contest.
