CORTLAND, N.Y. – Ithaca's Camryn Coffey hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the visiting Bombers to a 70-69 victory over Cortland in the women's basketball season opener for both teams.
Cortland took a 68-66 lead on
Logan Streety's (Elma/Iroquois) layup off a back-door inbounds play with 19 seconds remaining. Annabella Yorio hit the second of two free throws with eight seconds left to bring Ithaca within one, but Cortland pushed the lead back to two after
Kaeli McAnally (Islip) hit the second of two foul shots with six seconds left. Ithaca's Zoraida Icabalceta took the ensuing inbounds pass, dribbled down the left sideline and found Coffey open at the top of key. Coffey buried the shot - her first made 3-pointer of the game - as time expired to give Ithaca the victory.
McAnally led Cortland with 17 points and seven assists. She was 5-of-8 from the field, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, and grabbed five rebounds. Streety scored a career-high 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting and pulled down nine rebounds.
Brooke Tillotson (Marathon) recorded career bests of 10 points, seven rebounds and four steals and
Abby Wilkinson (Cato/Bishop Grimes) scored nine points and dished out four assists.
June Dickson led Ithaca with 20 points and five steals and Tori Drevna scored 14 points. Anya Watkins registered a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds and Coffey scored nine points.
Cortland shot 43 percent from the field and Ithaca finished at 38 percent. The teams combined for 39 turnovers - 20 by Ithaca and 19 by Cortland - and both teams struggled from the foul line. Ithaca finished 12-for-25 (48 percent) at the charity stripe and the Red Dragons were 10-for-17 (59 percent).
Cortland trailed 14-4 early but was within 17-16 after one quarter. Ithaca held a 34-30 halftime lead and was up 48-45 entering the fourth quarter. Cortland briefly led by six, 61-55, after a Streety layup with 3:41 left, but Ithaca tied it on treys by Dickson and Drevna over the next minute. Cortland later trailed by two before tying in on a Streety layup with 34 seconds left and eventually taking the lead on Streety's layup with 19 seconds left, setting up the final dramatics.
