READING, PA. – The Cortland men's basketball team opened up a 17-point second-half lead and held off a late Neumann University charge as the Red Dragons defeated the Knights, 69-66, to claim third place at the Albright College DoubleTree Holiday Tournament.
Kareem Lubin (Monroe/Washingtonville) made 10 of his 11 shots, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, and led the Red Dragons (5-4) with 25 points and six rebounds. He also handed out three assists.
Kendall Arcuri (Staten Island/St. Joseph by the Sea), who was named to the all-tournament team, scored a career-high 19 points and added five assists and three steals.
TayShaun Hawkins (Riverhead) scored a career-best 11 points, including two 3-pointers, and
Jaylen Warmack (Utica/Utica Notre Dame) shared the team lead with five assists.
Jalen Vaughns led Neumann (2-11) with 19 points and eight rebounds. TJ Lewis registered 15 points and four assists, Jarell Keel finished with 10 points and seven rebounds, and Amari Little had four assists.
Cortland led 36-24 with just over four minutes left in the first half, but Neumann scored the last six points and was within 36-30 at halftime. Cortland opened the second half on a 13-2 run, including four points each from Lubin and Warmack, and held a 49-32 advantage five minutes into the period.
Cortland's lead was 59-44 with about 10 minutes remaining before the Knights scored 12 straight points, five by Lewis, over the next three and a half minutes to cut their deficit to three. Neumann was eventually within a point at 65-64 on two Lewis free throws with 2:22 left.
Hawkins scored with two minutes left to give Cortland a 67-64 lead, and neither team scored again until Keel's bucket with 25 seconds left again drew Neumann within one. Arcuri sank two free throws with 20 second remaining to put Cortland up, 69-66, and Neumann missed two potential game-tying 3-pointers in the closing seconds.
