Cortland Wins Shootout vs. Host Oswego for Third-Place Finish

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Junior Anthony Bernardo (Hauppauge/P.A.L. Junior Islanders) converted in the ninth round of a tiebreaker shootout, and sophomore goalie Ronan Mobley (Playa Del Rey, CA/New Hampshire Avalanche) followed with a stop on Oswego's last attempt to seal Cortland's third-place showing at the Oswego Hockey Classic after the teams played to a 1-1 tie through regulation and overtime.

Senior Sutter Donegan (Cicero/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) scored his ninth goal of the season for the Red Dragons (9-3-1). Senior Geordan Buffoline (Ballston Spa/Vermont Lumberjacks) collected an assist on the goal. Mobley finished with 31 saves, including five in the five-minute extra period.

Tyler Flack netted the goal for Oswego (8-6-1). Shane Bull picked up an assist. Goalie Cal Schell turned aside 29 shots.

Donegan gave Cortland the lead just 2:01 into the game, scoring on a sharp-angle shot from the left circle after Buffoline won an offensive-zone faceoff. Flack tied the game at 14:59 of the opening period, deking Mobley after a Cortland turnover in the neutral zone.

The Red Dragons outshot the Lakers, 10-4, in the second period, and the teams each put 11 shots on goal in the third period with each goalie turning aside all attempts to force overtime. Oswego held a 5-3 shot advantage in the five minutes, but Mobley and Schell held their ground to send the game to a shootout to determine the third-place finisher.

The teams matched their first eight attempts with each picking up goals on its first, third and fifth tries. In the ninth round, Bernardo scored on a shot under the crossbar, and Mobley sealed the outcome with a save on the Lakers' final chance.
