RYE, N.Y. – The Cortland men's hockey team scored the last four goals of the game to erase a first-period deficit and skated to a 5-2 non-conference victory at Manhattanville Tuesday afternoon at the Playland Ice Casino. With the win, head coach
Joe Cardarelli earned his 100th career victory, all at Cortland.
Sophomore
Devlin O'Kane (Chicago, IL/New Jersey 87's) led the Red Dragons (10-3-1) with a pair of goals. Senior
Sutter Donegan (Cicero/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and sophomores
Colby Seitz (Eden/Corpus Christi IceRays) and
Stephen Kyrkostas (Selden/Johnstown Tomahawks) each chipped in with a goal, freshman
D.J. Walsh (Port Jefferson Station/P.A.L. Junior Islanders) registered two assists, while five players contributed one assist. Freshman goalie
Hunter Hein (Peoria, AZ/Texas Roadrunners) made 29 saves.
Mitchell Watson paced the Valiants (4-9) with a goal and an assist. Tristan Frese netted a goal, Artem Mateichenko recorded two assists and Raymon Speerbrecker added an assist. Goalie Sebastian Woods stopped 28 shots.
Watson gave Manhattanville the lead at 2:24 of the first period with a shot from the left edge of the right circle after a Valiant faceoff win. Seitz tied the game on the power play at 15:44. Frese gave the Valiants back the lead just over two minutes later with a shot through traffic from the right point with the man advantage.
The Red Dragons then dominated the second period of play, holding a 16-4 shot advantage that led to three unanswered goals. Kyrkostas tied the game at 3:56 with a wrist shot from the right circle after a length of the ice rush. O'Kane then put Cortland ahead, 3-2, finishing off a 4-on-2 from the left circle after Hein made a save that started the break out. O'Kane's second goal came 1:13 before the end of the period when he scored off a rebound in front, and the Red Dragons took a 4-2 lead into the final 20 minutes.
The Valiants pressured Cortland in the third period, owning a 14-7 advantage in shots, but Hein met the challenge. Manhattanville pulled Woods for an extra skater late in the game, which eventually led to Donegan's empty-net goal with 15 seconds remaining after he forced a turnover deep in the Valiants' defensive zone for the 5-2 final.
