Cortland Falls to #14 Skidmore on Late Goal

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Mason Beecher scored with 2:14 remaining in regulation to lead nationally 14th-ranked Skidmore to a 4-3 victory at Cortland Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons dropped to 10-4-1, while the Thoroughbreds improved to 10-3-2.

Seniors Nate Berke (Williamsville/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and Sutter Donegan (Cicero/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) paced Cortland with a goal and an assist. Junior Domenic Settimo (East Meadow/P.A.L. Junior Islanders) netted a goal. Sophomore Nick Serio (Bayville/P.A.L. Junior Islanders) recorded two assists, and sophomore Colby Seitz (Eden/Corpus Christi IceRays) added an assist. Sophomore goalie Ronan Mobley (Playa Del Ray, CA/New Hampshire Avalanche) made 22 saves.

Junior Freddie Ilias led Skidmore with a goal and two assists. Beecher and senior Nick Cozzi finished with a goal and an assist, and junior Zach Frisk netted a goal. Junior Owen Gonter registered two assists, while junior Kevin Urquhart and sophomore Ryan Waltman chipped in with one assist apiece. Senior goalie Tate Brandon stopped 28 shots.

Donegan gave Cortland a 1-0 lead at 8:41 of the opening period with a one-time shot from deep on the left side off a pass from Serio. Ilias tied the game on the power play with a shot from the bottom of the right circle at 11:44 before Settimo gave Cortland back the lead at 15:25 on a one-time shot in the slot.

Frisk tied the game at 9:02 of the second period, scoring into the open side of the net from the right side. Berke put the Red Dragons back in front at the 10:14 mark with a sharp-angle shot from the right side. Cozzi knotted up the game for a third time with his goal from the slot on the power play 25 seconds before the end of the second period.

In the third period, each team had a power-play chance but failed to capitalize. Beecher scored the game winner at 17:46 on a rebound in front. Cortland pulled Mobley late for an extra skater, but after a face-off in the neutral zone, the Red Dragons put Mobley back in goal and couldn't pull him again until right before the final horn as the Thoroughbreds earned the 4-3 win.
