PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Presleigh Brunner led five double-figure scorers with 13 points as St. John Fisher defeated visiting Cortland, 85-57, in women's basketball non-league play.
St. John Fisher improved to 7-2 with the win. Cortland dropped to 4-3. Both teams advanced to the second round of last year's NCAA Division III tournament.
Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) led Cortland with 15 points and 15 rebounds. She was 5-for-8 from the field with two 3-pointers.
Jackie Funk (Penfield) also scored 15 points. She made 5-of-11 shots and pulled down five rebounds.
Sophie Bissaillon (East Greenbush/Columbia) added eight points, while
Abby Wilkinson (Cato/Bishop Grimes) and
Lily Woodis (Dewittville/Chautauqua Lake) scored seven points each.
In addition to Brunner's 13 points, Sidney Tomasso and Madeline Ramsgard scored 11 points apiece and Alexa Gibson and Emily Mclaughin tallied 10 points each for the Cardinals. Tomasso led the team with seven rebounds and Claire Kruszka finished with eight points, seven assists and five steals.
Fisher shot 54 percent from the field and 92 percent (11-of-12) from the foul line. Cortland was held to 31 percent shooting from the floor but made 11-of-13 free throws (85 percent).
Cortland trailed 19-13 after one quarter and Fisher opened the second quarter on a 11-5 run to take a 30-18 lead. The Red Dragons trailed by 16 at halftime and by 24 after three quarters.
Cortland will play at SUNY Poly in a non-league game Saturday at noon.
