Red Dragons Hang on for 3-2 Win vs. Brockport

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland men's hockey team built a 3-0 lead after two periods on the strength of three power-play goals and held off a third-period rally by Brockport to earn a 3-2 SUNYAC victory Friday night at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons improved to 13-7-1 overall and 8-4 in the conference. The Golden Eagles dropped to 8-13 and 3-9.

Senior Nick Grupp (Depew/Brantford 99ers) led Cortland with a goal and an assist. Senior Trevor Veneklase (Brentwood, TN/Seahawks Hockey Club) and sophomore Johnny Facchini (Succasunna, NJ/P.A.L. Junior Islanders) each netted a goal. Juniors Sutter Donegan (Cicero/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and Nate Berke (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres), sophomore Domenic Settimo (East Meadow/P.A.L. Junior Islanders) and freshmen Nicholas Serio (Bayville/P.A.L. Junior Islanders) and Colby Seitz (Eden/Corpus Christi IceRays) collected one assist apiece. Senior goalie Luca Durante (Brampton, ON/Aurora Tigers) made 28 saves.

Junior Connor Galloway (Sugar Hill, GA/Boston Jr. Rangers) and freshman Manny Sanchez (Potsdam/Boston Advantage) tallied the goals for Brockport with Galloway adding an assist. Senior Scott Ramaekers (Hamburg/Buffalo Jr. Sabres), junior Andrew Harley (Brockport/East Coast Wizards) and sophomore Jake Mendeszoon (Methuen, MA/New Hampshire Avalanche) each picked up an assist. Senior goalie Aidan Curry (Freeland, MI/Boston Jr. Rangers) stopped 32 shots.

After a penalty-free and scoreless first period, the Red Dragons scored three goals with the man advantage i less than a seven-minute span to take a 3-0 lead. Grupp scored on a wrist shot from the left circle at 1:16, and Facchini blasted a slap shot past Curry from the left point at 3:32 with Cortland up two skaters. Veneklase finished the run at 8:11 with his eighth goal of the season.

The Golden Eagles cut Cortland's lead to 3-1 at 6:06 of the third period on Sanchez's one-time shot from the left side. Galloway made it a 3-2 game on the power-play at 11:47, scoring from the slot on a rebound after Durante denied Ramaekers' initial shot. Brockport pulled Curry for an extra skater with 55 seconds remaining, but Cortland was able to force a Golden Eagle icing with nine seconds on the clock. Curry was put back in goal and the final nine seconds ticked off as Cortland held on the 3-2 win.
