SALISBURY, MD. – A six-goal run spanning the first and second quarters proved to be decisive as host and nationally fifth-ranked Salisbury defeated 14th-ranked Cortland, 20-12, in men's lacrosse non-league action.
Cortland (4-1) was led by
Dante Yacavone (Homer) with five goals and one assist.
Tyler Starrett (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) and
Jason Chiodo (Hamburg) each finished with two goals and one assist and
Ryan Scanlon (Cornelius, NC/William Amos Hough) registered two assists.
Travis Wagner (Penfield) made 11 saves in 56:46, while
Matt Stento (Bethlehem) allowed one goal over the final 3:14.
Owen Neubauer (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) won 16-of-33 faceoffs and picked up 12 ground balls and
Dominick Natale (Homer) caused four turnovers.
Brice Bromwell led Salisbury (7-1) with six goals. Jack Dowd finished with four goals and three assists and Jude Brown assisted on 10 of the Sea Gulls' 20 goals in addition to scoring once. Nicholas Ransom registered 13 saves, Blake Malamphy won 12-of-20 faceoffs and grabbed six ground balls and John DeFazio ended with three caused turnovers and five ground balls.
Cortland led 2-1 with 7:21 left in the first quarter after goals by Chiodo and Yacavone. Salisbury followed with a 6-0 run that featured three goals by Bromwell and the hosts led 7-2 with 10:44 remaining in the second. Cortland got back to within a three-goal margin three times, the last at 9-6, but could get no closer.
