CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sydney Carpenter scored with 6:45 remaining to break a 3-3 tie and visiting St. John Fisher University defeated nationally 15th-ranked Cortland, 5-3, in a women's lacrosse non-league matchup. St. John Fisher, which is among the receiving votes section of the latest Division III national poll, improved to 5-1 with the win. Cortland is now 3-3.
St. John Fisher goalie Lilly Goodsell made nine saves, while Cortland goalie
Margaret Morgan (New Fairfield, CT) finished with seven saves.
Cara Landry led the guests with two goals and one assist and Mary Fiorentino registered a goal and an assist. Ella Stewart finished with five ground balls and two caused turnovers and Carpenter had three ground balls and two caused turnovers and won three draw controls.
Lauren Hopsicker (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) led Cortland with a goal and an assist and
Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) and
Rachel Janis (Laurel/Mattituck) scored one goal apiece.
Kayla Sweeney (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) led the Red Dragons with five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Hopsicker added four ground balls and two caused turnovers and
Rachel Rempe (Aquebogue/Riverhead) also forced two turnovers.
Fisher led 1-0 after the first quarter behind a Fiorentino goal, assisted by Landry, with 5:36 left in the period. Cashman tied the game just over a minute into the second quarter off a feed from Hopsicker, but the Cardinals scored the final two goals of the half - Mykenzie Black, set up by Fiorentino, with 10:18 left and Landry, off a Tara Osterdale assist, with just a second left before halftime.
Cortland knotted the game with two third-quarter goals. Hopsicker scored off a free position 39 seconds into the quarter and Janis tied the game with 26 seconds remaining. Goodsell made four of her nine saves in the fourth quarter to keep the Red Dragons off the board. Carpenter's free-position goal gave Fisher the lead with 6:45 left and Landry added an insurance goal with 2:47 left. Fisher won the ensuing draw and had a shot hit the post, but Cortland was thwarted by a Goodsell save with 38 seconds remaining. Cortland got the ball back one more time with less than 20 seconds left but turned it back over in the closing seconds.
Fisher held a slight edge in shots, 19-17, and ground balls, 21-17, and won 7-of-11 draws. Each team turned the ball over 19 times.
