Red Dragons Hold Off Brockport, 10-8, to Open SUNYAC Play

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The nationally 15th-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team used a second-half, four-goal run in a six minute, 17 second span to erase a one-goal deficit and held on for a 10-8 victory at Brockport Saturday afternoon in the SUNYAC opener for both teams.

Graduate student Amy Hoeffner (Bay Shore) and junior Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) each scored three goals to lead the offense for the Red Dragons (4-3, 1-0). Senior Rachel Janis (Laurel/Mattituck) tallied a goal and two assists, freshman Mackenzie Beck (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) recorded a goal and an assist, graduate student Lauren Hopsicker (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and sophomore Eva Kloepfer (Syracuse/West Genesee) each netted a goal and freshman Rachel Rempe (Aquebogue/Riverhead) collected two assists.

Freshman goalie Margaret Morgan (New Fairfield, CT) registered five saves for Cortland. Hoeffner won four draw controls, and Rempe secured three draws. Rempe and graduate student Kayla Sweeney (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) each scooped up two ground balls.

Alayna Foos paced the offense for the Golden Eagles (1-4, 0-1) with three goals. Cassidy Burnash recorded two goals and an assist, Paige Thowe scored twice and Courtney Cunningham added a goal.

Goalie Hannah Parsons turned aside 11 shots. Journey Naab won four draws, while Taylor Ford secured three draws and two ground balls.

Brockport built a 3-1 lead after the first quarter as three different players scored a goal. The Red Dragons tied the game at the half at 4-4 with Hoeffner and Janis netting goals inside the final 30 seconds of the second quarter.

Hopsicker gave Cortland its first lead of the game at 10:07 of the third quarter, and after the Golden Eagles regained the lead at 6-5, the Red Dragons put together their key four-goal run capped by three consecutive goals by Cashman to open the fourth quarter to take a 9-6 advantage. Burnash and Hoeffner then traded goals, and Thowe scored with 34 seconds remaining for the 10-8 final.
