Huge First Half Leads to 17-6 Win at Utica

UTICA, N.Y. – The nationally 20th-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team erupted for 14 first-half goals in cruising to a 17-6 win at Utica University Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action. The Red Dragons improved to 5-3, while the Pioneers dropped to 4-3.

Graduate student Hannah Keech (Penn Yan/Penn Yan Academy) and junior Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) paced Cortland's offense with five goals with Cashman adding an assist. Senior Rachel Janis (Laurel/Mattituck) tallied three goals and three assists, graduate student Amy Hoeffner (Bay Shore) netted two goals, and sophomore Nicole Iapoce (Highland) and freshman Rachel Rempe (Aquebogue/Riverhead) each notched a goal. Senior Madelyn Czyz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) collected two assists, and graduate student Lauren Hopsicker (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) added an assist.

Freshman goalie Margaret Morgan (New Fairfield, CT) made three saves and scooped up three ground balls for the Red Dragons. Hoeffner won 10 draw controls, while Rempe secured three draws. Cashman, Czyz and junior Julie Kadletz (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) collected three ground balls apiece.

Samantha DeCondo led Utica with three goals. Grace Stuhlman scored twice, and Katie Crofoot contributed a goal. Goalie Breese Burlingame stopped 11 shots and collected two ground balls. Aana Blaszka finished with two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Mara Cunningham won three draws, and Alyssa Pisano and Ruby Ackerman each scooped up three ground balls.

The Red Dragons built an 8-2 lead after the opening quarter, which featured two goals each from Keech, Cashman and Janis. Keech and Cashman added two more goals in the second quarter as Cortland took a commanding 14-3 lead into the half. The teams traded the last six goals of the game with Iapoce completing the scoring with 1:27 on the clock for the 17-6 final.
