A "Hoeff"-ty 19-5 Victory for Women's Lacrosse at Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Graduate student Amy Hoeffner (Bay Shore) scored a career-high five goals and secured 11 draw controls to lead the nationally 19th-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team to a 19-5 victory at Plattsburgh in SUNYAC play Wednesday afternoon. The Red Dragons raised their overall record to 9-3 and their conference mark to 5-0. The Cardinals fell to 5-6 and 1-4.

Freshman Mackenzie Beck (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) matched her career high with four goals for Cortland. Graduate student Lauren Hopsicker (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) recorded three goals and two assists, and junior Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) also scored five points on two goals and three assists. Sophomore Nicole Iapoce (Highland) tallied two goals and an assist, senior Rachel Janis (Laurel/Mattituck) and junior Danielle Regan (Brewster) each contributed a goal and an assist and graduate student Hannah Keech (Penn Yan/Penn Yan Academy) netted a goal.

Freshman goalie Margaret Morgan (New Fairfield, CT) turned aside four shots for the Red Dragons. Cashman won six draws and caused two turnovers, Hopsicker recorded two caused turnovers, graduate student Kayla Sweeney (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) finished with three ground balls and two caused turnovers and freshman Rachel Rempe (Aquebogue/Riverhead) secured three draws.

Lindsay Guzzetta paced Plattsburgh's offense with three goals. Cynthia Barnosky finished with a goal and an assist, Kate Kennedy netted a goal and Emma McLaughlin, and Maddy Garcia each collected an assist.

Goalie Lilla Nease registered 14 saves and two ground balls. McLaughlin caused three turnovers, Caitlin Nash registered three ground balls and two caused turnovers, Rachel LaMar scooped up four ground balls and Lillian Gilroy added three ground balls.

Cortland took a 4-1 lead after the first quarter as four different players scored. The lead grew to 10-2 at the half as Cashman netted a pair of goals in the second quarter while four others each scored once. The Red Dragons took complete control of the game by scoring the first five goals of the third quarter, including two from Hoeffner, to balloon their lead to 15-2. Guzzetta stopped the run with her second goal of the game, but Regan ended the quarter with her second goal at the 1:28 mark. Hoeffner, Iapoce and Beck notched goals to open the fourth quarter as Cortland's lead grew to 19-3. Guzzetta scored at 6:47 and Barnosky scored with 3:48 to play for the 19-5 final.
