Beville Reaches 400 Career Wins in 17-8 Victory at Oneonta

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Cortland men's lacrosse team opened up a commanding 12-2 lead at the half in earning a 17-8 win at Oneonta in SUNYAC action Saturday afternoon. With the victory, Cortland head coach Steve Beville recorded his 400th career win, raising his record to 400-175 through 35 years on the sideline, including a 239-57 mark at Cortland.

Senior Dante Yacavone (Homer) led the visiting Red Dragons (10-4, 4-1 SUNYAC) with four goals and an assist. Senior Tyler Starrett (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) netted three goals, while senior Jason Chiodo (Hamburg) and sophomore Caden Yancey (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) each tallied two goals and an assist.

Senior Troy Morris (Long Beach) and freshman Nick Stoecker (East Setauket/Ward Melville) recorded one goal and one assist apiece. Sophomores Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East), Kole Stuver (Fairport) and Ryan Scanlon (Cornelius, NC/William Amos Hough) and freshman Nathan Nagengast (Bay Shore) each scored a goal. Sophomore Klay Stuver (Fairport) contributed two assists, and senior Justin Wainwright (Homer) and sophomore Ryan Smith (East Islip) added an assist.

Junior Travis Wagner (Penfield) started in goal for Cortland, making six saves in 39:34. Senior Matt Stento (Bethlehem) stopped four shots in 9:24, and freshman Nick Mathes (Smithtown/Smithtown East) also registered four saves over 11:02. Sophomore Rich Finn (LaGrange/Arlington) won 10-of-15 faceoffs. Sophomore Johnny Bowen (Yorktown) forced three turnovers, and Wainwright secured a team-high four ground balls.

Jamie O'Neil led Oneonta (7-5, 3-2 SUNYAC) with four goals. Evan Kelly, Matthew Mangels, Jack Dinnegan and David Guest each scored a goal. Matthew Krieg picked up two assists, while Sam Haita and Connor Gallagher registered one assist.

Goalie Harrison Boukas made 20 saves. Steve Barikyan won 10-of-18 faceoffs. Christian Moreno collected five ground balls and caused three turnovers, and Bryce Caffrey secured five ground balls.

Cortland took a 7-1 lead after the first quarter as six different players score goals. The advantage grew to 12-2 at intermission with five different visiting Red Dragons scoring goals. Cortland's lead ballooned to 17-3 after three quarters before Oneonta closed out the game with five fourth-quarter goals for the 17-8 final.
