Red Dragons Sweep Potsdam to Start SUNYAC Play

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Cortland softball team opened SUNYAC play with a doubleheader sweep at Potsdam. The Red Dragons (11-5, 2-0 SUNYAC) won 8-0 in five innings in the opener and 16-2 in the second game after breaking open a tight game with four runs in the sixth and 10 in the seventh.
 
Cortland travels to Plattsburgh Saturday for a 12 p.m. conference twinbill.

Karlee Weeden (Maybrook/Valley Central) tossed a one-hit shutout over five innings, with the game called after five due to the eight-run rule. She struck out six and walked one. Gina Meyers (Liverpool) finished 3-for-3 with two triples, a double, a walk, an RBI and three runs scored.
 
Weeden retired the first six batters she faced before walking Danielle Moscarello to lead off the bottom of the third. Kiara Lovejoy singled with two outs, but Moscarello was eventually thrown out at third during the play to end the inning. Weeden set down the next six hitter, four by strikeout, to complete the shutout. Potsdam starter Chesnie York allowed five runs in four and a third innings.
 
Cortland scored three times in the first on a passed ball, a Brooke Scheibe (Sayville) RBI groundout and a Kimberly Westenberg (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) RBI double. Meyers tripled with two outs in the fourth and scored on an Elaina Ornstein (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) RBI fielder's choice to make it 4-0, and the Red Dragons notched four runs in the fifth on a Halle Wright (Ballston Spa) RBI double, a Megan LaMont (Amsterdam) RBI groundout and Meyers' run-scoring triple, with Meyers scoring on an error during the play.

Westenberg shined both in the circle and at the plate for the Red Dragons in the nightcap. She tossed a complete game, allowing two runs on six hits with no walks and 11 strikeouts, and she was 2-for-5 with a double and four RBI.
 
Meyers went 2-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored, Julz Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) went 3-for-4 with a hit by pitch, RBI and two runs and McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) was 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI. Tori Reich (Cornwall) went 2-for-3 with a walk and Wright was 2-for-5 with three runs scored as Cortland finished with 17 hits.
 
Cortland held a slim 2-0 lead after five innings. Westenberg drove in the runs with an RBI groundout in the first and a two-out RBI single in the third. The Red Dragons plated four runs in the sixth on a Shannon Scotto (Putnam Valley/Lakeland) RBI single, a Meyers RBI fielder's choice and a Barry two-run single. Potsdam scored its two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a Kaylee Dobransky RBI double and Alexa Abbatantuono run-scoring single.
 
Cortland's 10-run seventh inning included nine unearned runs as the Bears (2-12, 0-2 SUNYAC) committed four errors. The inning also featured a Meyers RBI single, a pinch-hit RBI single by Talia D'Onofrio (Northport), a Westenberg two-run double and a Koch RBI double.
 
Potsdam starter Lexie Cottrill allowed six runs, two earned, in five and two thirds innings. She struck out four and walked one.
