Cortland Handed Pair of Walk-Off 6-5 Losses at Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Plattsburgh's Kelsy Waite drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning in both contests as the host Cardinals earned a pair of 6-5 victories over Cortland in SUNYAC softball action.
 
Cortland (11-7, 2-2 SUNYAC) rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh to tie Game 1 before Plattsburgh (11-3, 4-0 SUNYAC) scored in the bottom of the inning. In the second game, the Red Dragons led 5-4 before the hosts tallied twice in the bottom of the seventh.
 
Cortland will travel to RPI Tuesday for a 3 p.m. non-league doubleheader.
 
Plattsburgh 6, Cortland 5
 
Cortland trailed 5-2 entering the top of the seventh, but Brooke Scheibe (Sayville) led off the inning with a homer, Halle Wright (Ballston Spa) doubled with one out, Julz Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) reached on an error and, with two outs, Gina Meyers (Liverpool) hit a two-run double to score Wright and pinch runner Megan LaMont (Amsterdam). Plattsburgh, however, got a one-out double from Kristina Maggiacomo in the bottom of the inning and she scored the winning run on Waite's two-out single to right.
 
Kristen Langdon staked Plattsburgh to an early lead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first. Cortland tied the game in the second on a Kimberly Westenberg (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) double, Scheibe single and Wright two-run triple. Plattsburgh regained the lead in the bottom of the second on Claire Palmer's two-run single, and Palmer tripled in a run in the sixth to make it 5-2.
 
Maggiacomo was the winning pitcher after allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits. She struck out six and didn't walk anyone. Karlee Weeden (Maybrook/Valley Central) took the loss after allowing six runs in six and a third innings. Palmer finished 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead Plattsburgh. Scheibe and Wright each went 2-for-3 for the Red Dragons. Scheibe scored twice and drove in a run and Wright had two RBI and scored once.
 
Plattsburgh 6, Cortland 5
 
Plattsburgh was down, 5-4, entering the bottom of the seventh before its rally to complete the sweep. Langdon led off with a single, followed by a Julia Golino single to put runners on first and second. Maggiacomo singled to right to drive in the tying run, with runners ending up on second and third at the end of the play, and Waite hit a sac fly to right to bring home pinch runner Gwen Noll with the winning run.
 
The Cardinals grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second on Mikayla Manalo's two-run single. Cortland knotted the game in the top of the third on a Wright single, McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) RBI triple and Scheibe sac fly. Plattsburgh answered with two runs in the bottom of the third on a Kylie Persampire two-run single.
 
In the top of the sixth, Koch was hit by a pitch with one out and pinch runner LaMont came all the way around to score after a throwing error on a fielder's choice grounder to third. Meyers singled to put runners on first and third, then stole second. An error on a ball hit by the next batter brought home two runs to give Cortland the lead.
 
Golino went 2-for-3 and Langdon and Maggiacomo each were 2-for-4 for Plattsburgh. Barry finished 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI and Meyers was 2-for-4 for Cortland. Golino was the winning pitcher, scattering nine hits and allowing five runs, two earned, in a complete-game outing. Westenberg took the loss in relief of Barry, who allowed four runs in four innings. Westenberg was charged with two runs on four hits in two and a third innings.
