Cortland Defeats New Paltz, 18-10

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Senior Jason Chiodo (Hamburg) led nine Cortland goal scorers with five goals as the Red Dragon men's lacrosse team defeated New Paltz, 18-10, Saturday afternoon in SUNYAC play. The Red Dragons improved to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference, while the Hawks fell to 5-5 and 1-2.

Sophomore Caden Yancey (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) matched Chiodo's five points with three goals and two assists. Senior Troy Morris (Long Beach) netted three goals, sophomore Klay Stuver (Fairport) scored twice, freshman Nathan Nagengast (Bay Shore) picked up a goal and two assists and seniors Dante Yacavone (Homer) and Tyler Starrett (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) and each tallied a goal and an assist.

Sophomores Zach Perlett (Poughquag/Iona Prep) and Ryan Smith (East Islip) scored a goal, sophomore Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) recorded two assists and senior Austin Palmer (Hamburg/St. Francis) picked up one assist for the Red Dragons.

Junior goalie Travis Wagner (Penfield) stopped 16 shots in 52:16 for Cortland before giving way to senior Matt Stento (Bethlehem), who turned aside six shots over the final 7:44. Sophomore Rich Finn (LaGrange/Arlington) won 16-of-25 faceoffs and collected eight ground balls. Yacavone, Yancey and senior Justin Wainwright (Homer) each scooped up four ground balls, while Palmer and freshman Dino Bowen (Yorktown) secured three ground balls.

John Reese and Thomas Armetta paced the New Paltz offense with three goals apiece. Ryan Scully netted two goals, Anthony Senecal and Colin Cleary each scored a goal, Ethan Scully and James Flanagan contributed two assists and Zach Schmidt chipped in with one assist.

Goalie Ryan Steinhart registered 25 saves and three ground balls. Matt Brignati won 11 faceoffs and collected seven ground balls. Tim Russell secured five ground balls and caused two turnovers, Reese and Armetta and Michael Devoe each recorded three ground balls, and Aidan Gregory forced two turnovers.
