Cortland Opens Season with 1-1 Tie at RPI

TROY, N.Y. – The Cortland women's soccer team opened up its season with a 1-1 draw at RPI Friday night as each team tallied a first-half goal in the contest.

Graduate student Jayden Kelley (East Berne/Voorheesville) scored the goal for the Red Dragons with senior Kayla Valerioti (Oakdale/Connetquot) picking up the assist. Junior goalie Kristen Spendal (Dumont, NJ) registered three saves.

Gwen Barnes scored for RPI. Goalie Megan Wampner made two saves.

Barnes gave the Engineers the lead in the seventh minute, converting a penalty kick after a Cortland handball in the box. Kelley tied the game in the 32nd minute. Valerioti headed an intended clearing pass by RPI to Kelley who slipped a sliding shot past Wampner from the right side of the six-yard box.

The Red Dragons had two late chances to grab the lead in the final 30 seconds, but shots by graduate student Cam Stone (Ilion/Central Valley Academy) and Valerioti missed the mark.
