Red Dragons Drop #23 Herons, 2-1, in OT

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore Molly Miller (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) scored six minutes, nine seconds into overtime to lift the Cortland field hockey team to a 2-1 victory versus nationally 23rd-ranked William Smith Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Stadium White.

Junior Gianna Trunfio (Clinton) also scored a goal for Cortland (4-0), and junior Isabel Adams (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) picked up an assist. Sophomore goalie Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) stopped one shot for the Red Dragons.

First-year Leah Griffith (Rochester/East Rochester) scored William Smith's goal with graduate student Kate Barilla (Dallas, PA/Wyoming Seminary) collecting an assist. Senior goalie Brittany Foster (Danvers, MA/Berwick Academy) registered four saves for the Herons (4-3). Barilla recorded a defensive save.

The teams combined for just 13 shots in the game with scoring chances coming at a minimum. Cortland created the first opportunity 4:50 into the game, but Foster made a kick save on junior Jamie Snyder's (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) hard shot from eight yards out.

William Smith took a 1-0 lead with 3:14 remaining in the third quarter on its first shot on goal in the game. Griffith inserted a penalty corner to Barilla at the top of the circle. Barilla blasted a low ball toward the cage that Griffith deflected past Morgan for her first goal of her career.

Cortland nearly tied the game with 9:17 remaining in regulation, but Foster made a diving save on junior Keira Ettere (Mahopac/Lakeland) at the right post. Trunfio tied the game just 30 seconds later on a penalty corner with her team-high fifth goal of the season. Adams fed a pass into the middle of the circle that Trunfio controlled and finished off with a shot inside the right post. Trunfio then had an opportunity to put Cortland ahead with 6:02 left in the fourth quarter on a penalty stroke. Foster saved the stroke attempt, but the official whistled for the chance to be taken again. Trunfio again was denied by Foster, and the game went into overtime.

The Herons earned two early penalty corners in the extra time but could not capitalize. Shortly after entering the game, Miller tallied the game winner. She worked the ball into the middle of the circle and got off a shot that Barilla denied. Miller jumped on the rebound and deposited a shot for the 2-1 Cortland win.
