Cortland Opens Conference Play with 7-0 Win vs. Fredonia

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's soccer team opened SUNYAC play with a dominating 7-0 victory versus Fredonia Saturday afternoon at Holloway Field. The Red Dragons improved to 5-2-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The Blue Devils dropped to 3-4-1 and 0-2.

Graduate student Jayden Kelley (East Berne/Voorheesville) led the Cortland offense with two goals and an assist. Senior Kayla Valerioti (Oakdale/Connetquot) also tallied two goals. Freshman Tyla Vuotto (Lynbrook) recorded a goal and two assists, freshman Hannah Nolan (Montour Falls/Odessa-Montour) contributed a goal and an assist and sophomore Julia DeTurris (Hicksville) netted a goal. Senior Liz Allen (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) collected two assists, and graduate student Bryn Thompson (Hopewell Junction/Arlington) chipped in with an assist.

Junior goalie Kristen Spendal (Dumont, NJ) made four saves in 68:04 for the Red Dragons before giving way to sophomore Nicole Blazo (Massapequa/St. Anthony's), who did not face a shot on goal in her first career action. Junior Dani Rubino (Mechanicville) started in goal for Fredonia, making four saves in 68:04. Freshman Abby Szymkowiak (Hamburg/Frontier) played the final 21:56, stopping two shots.

Valerioti opened the scoring in the 16th minute, one-timing a cross from the left by Allen after a long carry. Vuotto made it a 2-0 game in the 30th minute. Thompson sent a long free kick into the box that Kelley flicked to Vuotto who scored from deep in the box. Kelley struck for her first goal in the 39th minute, collecting a through ball from Vuotto and finishing off a breakaway.

Kelley pushed the lead to 4-0 in the 55th minute on a header off a cross from Vuotto. Valerioti then scored on a loose ball just under two minutes later to make it a 5-0 game. Nolan's first career goal in the 69th minute on a loose ball pushed the lead to 6-0 before DeTurris scored on a one-time shot off a cross from Nolan in the 71st minute for the 7-0 final.
