CORTLAND, N.Y. –
Sydney Reinisch (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) scored off a penalty corner play with just over six minutes remaining to lift nationally 21st-ranked Cortland to a 1-0 win over visiting Geneseo in a SUNYAC contest.
Cortland remained unbeaten on the season at 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference. Geneseo is now 4-3 overall and 0-1 in league play. Cortland and Geneseo met in last year's SUNYAC tournament championship game, with Cortland winning that contest, 2-1 in overtime.
Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) made six saves for her first solo shutout of the season. Geneseo's Sarah Quinlan finished with five saves, four in the second half.
Geneseo controlled a good portion of the action in the first half, outshooting Cortland, 7-1, over the first 30 minutes. Morgan made five of her six saves during the half to keep the game scoreless. Cortland outshot Geneseo in the second half, 8-3, and held an 8-1 penalty corner advantage during the half after the Knights had a 2-1 edge in that category in the first half.
Cortland earned a penalty corner with 6:10 left that resulted in the winning goal.
Jamie Snyder (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) took the corner and passed the ball to Reinisch at the upper left of the circle. Reinish pushed the ball slightly into the circle and blasted a shot into the cage for her third goal of the season. Cortland held Geneseo without a shot the rest of the way.
Cortland will host St. Lawrence in a non-league game Wednesday at 5 p.m.
