CANTON, N.Y. – The nationally 10th-ranked Cortland men's soccer team scored three second-half unanswered goals to erase a 1-0 deficit in earning a 3-1 non-conference victory at St. Lawrence Sunday afternoon. The Red Dragons evened their record at 1-1. The Saints dropped to 0-1-1.
Graduate student
Riley Williams (Watertown/South Jefferson) scored a pair of goals for Cortland. Senior
Jack Coleman (Newark Valley/Maine-Endwell) added a goal, and junior
Matt Shultz (Oneonta) recorded an assist. Sophomore goalie
Jordan Ott (Fort Worth, TX/Southwest Christian) turned aside three shots.
Max Mogul scored for St. Lawrence. Goalie Ben Woelfinger registered two saves.
After a scoreless first half, Mogul gave the Saints a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute, converting a penalty kick after a St. Lawrence player was pulled down in the box. Less than two minutes later, the momentum shifted in Cortland's favor. A Saint defender knocked down a possible scoring chance by the Red Dragons with his hand deep in the box, drawing a red card and a penalty kick for Williams, who converted to tie the game in the 51st minute.
Coleman netted the game winner in the 55th minute, running onto a soft pass back toward Woelfinger and one-timing a shot inside the left post. Williams capped the scoring in the 63rd minute with a 20-yard shot from the top of the box for the 3-1 final.
