OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego women's basketball team handed Cortland its first SUNYAC loss of the year, defeating the visiting Red Dragons, 59-47.
Chastin Giles led the Lakers (8-4, 4-2 SUNYAC) with 16 points and added nine rebounds. Shania Iglesias finished with 11 points and Giavanna White-Principio had eight points and 12 rebounds.
Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) paced Cortland (9-4, 5-1 SUNYAC) with 21 points and 12 rebounds. She was 9-of-18 from the field.
Brooke Tillotson (Marathon) ended with 10 points and six rebounds and
Jackie Funk (Penfield) pulled in six rebounds.
Mariah Huss (Kenmore/Sacred Heart Academy) led the Red Dragons with three steals and added two assists and
Kaeli McAnally (Islip) dished out a team-high four assists.
Cortland was held to 33 percent shooting from the field overall and couldn't buy a 3-pointer, finishing 1-of-22 from behind the arc. Oswego shot 35 percent overall and just 18 percent (4-of-22) from deep.
Oswego led 15-10 after the first quarter and 24-19 at the half. Cortland opened the third quarter on a 9-2 run, capped by a Tillotson layup, to take a 28-26 lead. Down 30-28, Oswego closed the third on a 17-4 streak, including 10 points by Chiles, to go up 45-34 after three quarters. Cortland got back to within six twice in the fourth, the last at 53-47 on Streety's layup with about four minutes left, but Giles hit a 3-pointer about a minute later and Cortland was scoreless the rest of the way.
