FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Cortland men's hockey team skated to a 2-2 overtime tie at Fredonia in SUNYAC action Saturday night at Steele Hall. The Red Dragons' record now stands at 10-5-2 overall and 6-2-1 in the conference. The Blue Devils are 4-12-1 and 3-8-1.
Juniors
Anthony Bernardo (Hauppauge/P.A.L. Junior Islanders) and
Johnny Facchini (Succasunna, NJ/P.A.L. Junior Islanders) scored the goals for Cortland. Senior
Cameron Knowlton (Kenai, AK/Charlotte Rush) recorded two assists, and senior
Jona Hildreth (Williamsville/Walpole Express) and freshman
Colin Anna (Tampa, FL/Wilkes Barre Scranton Knights) each contributed an assist. Sophomore goalie
Ronan Mobley (Playa Del Rey, CA/New Hampshire Avalanche) made 21 saves.
Ethan Pitzman and Johnny Malandruccolo netted the goals for Fredonia. Johnny Aonso collected two assists, and Jake Murphy added an assist. Goalie Logan Dyck turned aside 40 shots.
The Red Dragons opened up a 2-0 lead just past the midway point of the first period when Bernardo scored just 1:03 into the game and Facchini netted his goal at the 11:02 mark. Pitzman made it a 2-1 game at 16:55 of the first period before Malandruccolo tied the score 41 seconds before the end of the period.
Cortland outshot Fredonia, 11-8, in the second period and, 12-5, in the third period but the game went to overtime with the teams skating three players aside. Each team recorded three shots in the extra five-minute period with neither team netting the game winner as the game ended at 2-2.
The Red Dragons face Buffalo St. on Sunday at 3 p.m. in a game postponed from Friday due to inclement weather.
