CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland broke open a tight game in the fourth quarter and the Red Dragons defeated visiting Geneseo, 71-59, in SUNYAC women's basketball action.
Cortland (7-3, 3-0 SUNYAC) will host Brockport Saturday at 2 p.m.
More than half of Cortland's made field goals came from 3-point range. The Red Dragons hit 12-of-28 3-point attempts (43 percent) but finished only 11-of-38 (29 percent) from inside the arc to end the game at 35 percent overall. Geneseo (6-4, 1-2 SUNYAC), conversely, shot 42 percent from the floor overall, but only 17 percent (3-of-18) from the 3-point arc.
Abby Wilkinson (Cato/Bishop Grimes) led Cortland with Red Dragon career highs of 18 points and four rebounds. She was 2-of-4 from 3-point range and 6-of-8 from the foul line. Freshman
Jackie Funk (Penfield) posted collegiate bests of 16 points and seven rebounds. She made 6-of-8 field goals, including 4-of-5 from deep.
Lily Woodis (Dewittville/Chautauqua Lake) hit three 3-pointers and ended with 12 points, a career-high eight rebounds and a career-high tying four assists.
Also for the Red Dragons,
Kaeli McAnally (Islip) ended with nine points, a team-high five assists and four rebounds and
Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) scored eight points and grabbed three boards.
Kerry Dennis paced Geneseo with 23 points and 11 rebounds. She made 10-of-16 shots. Mackenzie Reigle scored 14 points, dished out seven assists and grabbed five rebounds.
Cortland led 21-14 after one quarter behind eight points from Wilkinson and held a 38-29 halftime lead. Woodis scored seven of her 10 first-half points in the second period. Geneseo whittled down Cortland's lead during the third quarter and eventually took a 49-47 lead on a Reigle layup with 1:52 left. The Red Dragons answered with the period's final four points on a Streety jumper and two Wilkinson foul shots and led 51-49 entering the final 10 minutes. Wilkinson netted nine points in the third quarter.
Cortland scored the first seven points of the fourth, highlighted by a Funk 3-pointer, to take a 58-49 lead with seven minutes left. The Knights were within 61-54 at the 4:08 mark after a Hannah Stockman 3-pointer, but Cortland put the game away with a 7-0 run, the first five points coming from Funk, to take a 68-54 lead with less than a minute left. Funk scored 11 of her 16 points in the final quarter.
