Red Dragons Complete Weekend Sweep of Buffalo St. with 3-1 Win

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally 15th-ranked Cortland women's ice hockey team scored the first three goals of the game in earning a 3-1 victory versus Buffalo St. in SUNYAC action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena to complete a two-game weekend sweep. The Red Dragons improved to 10-3-1 overall and 7-2-1 in the conference. The Bengals fell to 1-12-1 and 0-8.

Junior Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) and sophomores Kayla Persinger (Lewiston/Newark Ironbound) and Morgan Raymond (Windsor/Syracuse Valley Eagles) each netted goals for Cortland. Graduate students Elena Eichmann (Rochester/Syracuse Nationals) and Dany Donegan (Cicero/Syracuse Nationals) and freshman Katie Mahoney (Toronto, ON/Toronto Leaside) picked up an assist. Freshman goalie Olivia Lumpiesz (Pinckney, MI/Biggby Coffee Hockey Club) made 17 saves.

Sophomore Vanessa Willick (Williamsville/Buffalo Bisons) scored her team-high sixth goal of the season for Buffalo St. Senior Hannah Tingley (Stoneboro, PA/Washington Pride) assisted on the score. Junior goalie Jessica Auge (Laingsburg/Honeybaked Detroit) stopped 45 shots.

Persinger gave Cortland the lead at 13:28 of the first period when she intercepted a Buffalo St. clearing pass inside the blue line and scored with a wrist shot through traffic. Raymond put the Red Dragons ahead, 2-0, 37 seconds later scoring on a rebound after Eichmann's initial shot was denied by Auge.

With Cortland skating up two players, Hlasnick made it a 3-0 game just 11 seconds into the second period with a quick one-time shot from the right side off a feed from Donegan. Willick put the Bengals on the scoreboard exactly three minutes later, cleaning up a rebound with a shot into the open side of the net on the left side after Lumpiesz made a save on Tingley's initial shot.

The Red Dragons controlled most of the play in the third period, holding a 10-1 shot advantage, but neither team could score as Cortland secured the 3-1 victory.
